Box Score BALTIMORE – Despite recording season-highs in both shots and shots on goal, the Long Island University men's soccer team fell short 5-1 to the University of Maryland, Baltimore County Saturday night at the Retrievers Soccer Park.
Graduate student
Stefan Faistenauer scored his first goal for LIU and the Sharks tallied 15 shots along with seven shots on goal to set new season-highs in both categories. The Sharks also held the advantage in corner kicks as they finished with six to UMBC's four.
Along with Faistenauer's goal, freshman
Papa Ndoye had a match-high five shots and tied the match-high in shots on goal with two. Sophomore
Athanasios Coutroumpas had two shots and two shots on goal to tie with Ndoye for the match-high in that category. Sophomore

Selcuk Kahveci had one shot on goal each while senior

Chris Capaldo along sophomores

Xavier Verdu each had one shot. Senior goalkeeper
Matias Pesallaccia finished with three saves.
While Coutroumpas had a shot on goal to the bottom left that was saved by UMBC's goalkeeper in the opening minute, the Sharks were forced to overcome a deficit early as the Retrievers scored in the first and third minutes.
Ndoye fired a shot to the bottom center in the ninth minute, but three minutes later UMBC would expand its lead to 3-0. Parish would take a shot that sailed just high in the 18
th minute and neither side would score for the remainder of the half, which meant LIU would have to pull off a comeback down 3-0 in the second half.
The Sharks bounced back in the second half as Pesallaccia opened the half with a pair of saves; he saved a shot to the bottom center in the 49
th minute then save another to the bottom right in the 51
st minute. Ndoye came close to putting LIU on the scoreboard early, shooting in the 51
st and 53
rd minutes but missed to the top right on both occasions.
Rehberger would shoot to the bottom right in the 57
th minute but the Retrievers' goalkeeper was able to make the save. Ocampo followed with a shot that missed to the left in the 59
th minute.
In the 64
th minute, Coutroumpas had another shot on goal to the bottom left but could not put it past UMBC's goalkeeper. Ndoye would tally another shot shortly after, in the 68
th minute, but LIU would still remain in search of its first goal of the match.
Kahveci recorded the Sharks' fifth shot on goal of the match in the 72
nd minute, but it was saved in the bottom left. Under a minute later Faistenauer would miss high, but UMBC would take a 4-0 lead in the 73
rd minute.
Verdu almost have LIU its first goal of the match in the 77
th minute, but the shot missed just high. Ndoye would have another shot on goal in the 81
st minute, but the Retrievers' goalkeeper made the save to the bottom right.
UMBC made it a 5-0 match in the 88
th minute and Faistenauer got LIU on the scoreboard one minute later, scoring his first goal for LIU. As Capaldo's shot would miss right in the 89
th minute, the match would end with a final score of 5-1.
