SHELTON, Conn.- Morgan Schauer scored her first career goal, but the Long Island University women's ice hockey team dropped a 2-1 decision to Sacred Heart in non-conference action on Friday afternoon.
Schauer gave the Sharks early lead, scoring her first collegiate goal in the first minute of play. Both teams then held each other scoreless for most of the first period. With two minutes left, the Pioneers had a chance to tie it with an open net opportunity, but
Megan Bouveur made a great defensive save to keep the puck from crossing the line. Sacred Heart would continue to press and eventually broke through, tying the game with a minute and a half left in the first.
Both teams held each other scoreless for the second period. The Sharks had a chance right before the second intermission, but were unable to break through. Bouveur had an opportunity when she had a brake away, but her shot was saved by the Pioneers' goaltender. The Sharks had four shots in a row, trying to regain the lead, but three of the shots were saved and one missed wide.
The strong defense by both sides continued into the final period. The Sharks offense pressed early with six shots in the opening three minutes, but the Pioneers would not give in, keeping the score tied. The Sharks had another opportunity with six shots in two minutes, but could not break through the strong Sacred Heart defense. The Pioneers would be the ones to break open the tie and take its first lead of the game in the 13
th minute of the third.
Carrigan Umpherville's shot in the last six seconds was saved, forcing LIU to call a timeout. She would have one more chance to tie the game at the buzzer, but her shot missed just wide.
Kenzie Harmison made 32 saves in net for the Sharks. The defense also killed all five of Sacred Heart's power play opportunities.
Umpherville finished the game with one assist. The Sharks had 28 shots against the Pioneers. Umpherville,
Grace Dima and
Alva Johnsson each took four shots.
Linn Thomsen,
Issy Lebrun, and
Matilda af Bjur all took three shots, while Bouveur had two.

The Sharks return home for a two-game NEWHA against Franklin Pierce. Game one against the Ravens is on Friday, December 6 at Iceworks in Syosset, N.Y. Puck drop is slated for 3:00 p.m.
