LUBBOCK, Texas – The Long Island University men's basketball team led No. 12 Texas Tech at halftime, 42-41, but couldn't sustain the momentum, falling to the Red Raiders, 96-66 in United Supermarkets Arena Sunday afternoon. With the win, Texas Tech improves its home non-conference win streak to 51 straight games, and their season record to 5-0.
GAME BREAKDOWN
LIU came to play in Lubbock, and jumped out to an early lead. Senior
Julian Batts hit a three-pointer just over a minute into the game, and 18 seconds later, senior
Jashaun Agosto hit a long jumper to make it 5-0 Sharks. LIU continued to lead from there. Texas Tech wouldn't take the lead until nearly seven minutes into the game, and that didn't last long. After Tech went up, 12-11 at 13:23, senior
Raiquan Clark hit a three at 13:07 to put LIU back up, 14-12. The two teams battled from there, as neither squad would lead by more than five points in the first half.
The Red Raiders built up a four-point lead late in the half, but Texas native
Ashtyn Bradley would hit a three pointer with 51 seconds left in the stanza that cut the gap to 40-39. The Sharks had the last possession of the half, and after a missed shot, junior
Ty Flowers got a big offensive rebound and kicked it out to Agosto, who was waiting at the top of the arc. Agosto drained the three as the buzzer sounded, and LIU took a 42-41 lead into the half time break.
The second half got off to a sloppy start, as the officials called four fouls in the first 60 seconds of play. After that, Texas Tech started to settle into a groove. The Raiders would outscore the Sharks 11-2 over the next two minutes, widening the lead to 52-44 with 16 minutes left to go. Though the Sharks would keep it close for the next four minutes, including a three-pointer by sophomore
Jermaine Jackson Jr. that made it 62-54 with 11 minutes to play, eventually Texas Tech pulled away. The Red Raiders would eventually beat LIU, 96-66.
