Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men’s Basketball Outlasted by Ospreys

LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The Long Island University men's basketball team led at the half, and by as many as nine points in the second half, but fell in the first round of the Continental Tire Las Vegas Invitational to the University of North Florida, 95-92.  LIU (1-6) had a chance to win late in the game, but couldn't convert the last second shot, and UNF improved to 5-3 on the year.

GAME BREAKDOWN
LIU jumped out to an early lead in the game, scoring the first 10 points of the game. Down 10-0, North Florida called a timeout with 18:10 to play, in an attempt to stem LIU's momentum. The move worked. Coming out of the timeout, UNF hit four unanswered three pointers, as a part of a larger 14-2 run that put the Ospreys up,14-12 with 15 minutes left to play.

The two teams battled from there, and would stay close for most of the rest of the first half. Sophomore Virshon Cotton would hit a jumper that put the Sharks up by four, and sophomore Jermaine Jackson Jr. would convert a traditional three-point play with 1:09 to play that gave LIU a nine-point advantage. UNF would hit a late three, and LIU took a 46-40 lead into the halftime break.

LIU maintained momentum into the second half, and a three by senior Julian Batts at 16:36 would give the Sharks a nine-point lead, 52-43. But the Ospreys would start to chip away at the lead. A 6-0 run by UNF would cut the lead down to 54-52, and just over a minute later, a UNF layup gave them their first lead of the second half, 57-56 with 12:47 to play. From there, the two teams battled, as both would hold the lead, and the score would tie multiple times. With just under five minutes remaining, UNF would take an 81-76 lead, a lead that they would eventually increase to 88-81 with 1:47 to play.

But the Sharks would make a run late in the game. A three pointer from senior Ashtyn Bradley with 44 seconds left would bring LIU within four. 20 seconds later, Jackson would hit a three with 22 seconds left, and LIU forced a turnover on the inbounds. Batts would make a big three from the corner that cut UNF's lead to 93-92. Two made free throws by the Ospreys made it 95-92 with seven seconds left. The Sharks would get a last second shot off, but it didn't fall, and North Florida took the three-point win.
