Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

Dima Scores in Second Game Against Saint Michael’s

SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. – Grace Dima scored her second goal of the season as the Long Island University women's ice hockey team came up short against Saint Michael's on Saturday afternoon.

Dima scored the lone goal for the Sharks on the day, and her goal was assisted by Matilda af Bjur and Saige McKay. Dima, af Bjur and McKay all finished with one point.

Offensively, the Sharks outshot the Purple Knights 45-19, and won 36 faceoffs. Carrigan Umpherville and Megan Bouveur each finished with a team-best five shots on goal. Abby Latorella and Molly Meyers both had four shots on target. Dima, Linn Thomsen, Lauren Spino, Alva Johnsson, Stella Scott, and Paula Bergström all finished with three shots on goal.  af Bjur, Elissa Taylor, Renee Hoffmann, and Morgan Schauer had two shots on goal and McKay had one.

Ava Bailey made the start in net for the Sharks, and played all 60 minutes. She finished the day with 15 saves. Defensively, the Sharks killed off four out of the five Purple Knights' power plays.

The Sharks went on an early power play in the first two minutes of the first period, where they were able to get four shots off, three of which were saved and the last one was wide. The Purple Knights, however, would counter attack and take a 1-0 lead just five minutes in action. Dima found the back of the net to tie the game at one all, and get the Sharks on the board in the 13th minute. The Purple Knights took the lead back with just 10 seconds left of the first period.

The Sharks came out strong in the second period, looking to tie the game up again with three quick shots, but the first two shots were saved and the third missed wide. The Sharks were able to kill off another Purple Knights' power play by not allowing a shot. Saint Michael's would eventually capitalize on another power play opportunity midway through the second period and extended their lead to two goals.

The Sharks took 31 shots in the third period, but the Purple Knights' goalkeeper would not give in and would not allow the Sharks to get one past her. af Bjur nearly had a chance midway through the third, but her shot hit the pipe. Saint Michael's sealed the game with an empty net, short-handed goal in the last minute of the third period.

The Sharks continue NEWHA play next weekend with two games against Sacred Heart. On Friday, November 8 the Sharks will take a trip to Shelton, Conn. to take on Sacred Heart, before returning home to host Sacred Heart at the Northwell Health Ice Center on Saturday, November 9. Friday's game against the Pioneers is slated for a 4:00 p.m.
