SHELTON, Conn. – Freshman
Abby Latorella scored twice in 17 seconds during the third period to help the Long Island University women's ice hockey team come from behind during the final stanza to open its weekend series with Sacred Heart University with a 4-3 victory on Friday, Nov. 8.
After a scoreless first period, freshman
Matilda af Bjur put LIU on the board with a power-play goal early in the middle stanza. With 4:11 remaining, Sacred Heart knotted the score on a goal by Maddie Bishop and the Pioneers kept the momentum rolling with another goal with 45 seconds remaining to take a 2-1 lead at the final intermission.
The Sharks turned the tide early in the final period though, as Latorella scored the first goal of her career just over three minutes into the frame on an assist from classmate
Julia Hoffmann to level the scoring at 2-2. Just 17 seconds later, Latorella found the back of the net once again, this time scoring unassisted, giving LIU a 3-2 advantage. Fellow freshman
Saige McKay potted her first career goal midway through the frame to put the Sharks ahead by two goals. The goal proved to be the difference as the Pioneers scored with just over five minutes remaining before freshman
Mia McLeod made six saves during the final four minutes to help LIU hang on for the win.
Freshman
Paula Bergström led the Blue and Gold with six shots on the night and tallied one assist. Classmate
Carrigan Umpherville added to her team-high in points with one assist, giving her seven points on the season. McLeod made 33 saves on the evening to earn her first victory between the pipes.
LIU closes out the series with the Pioneers on Saturday, Nov. 9 when it hosts Sacred Heart at Northwell Health Ice Center beginning at 4:15 p.m.
