SYOSSET, N.Y.- Carrigan Umpherville scored the first goal in Sharks' history as the Long Island University women's ice hockey team fell to the University of Connecticut 6-1 on Saturday evening.
Umpherville's goal was assisted by
Matilda af Bjur and came in the middle of the third period. Goalkeeper
Ava Bailey had 46 saves in her first collegiate appearance. Offensively, the Sharks finished with 14 shots.
Abby Latorella lead the way with four, while
Alva Johnsson had three and Umpherville had two.
Linn Thomsen,
Megan Bouveur, af Bjur and
Paula Bergström each finished with a shot.
The Sharks killed one of the two Huskies' powerplays, and won 13 faceoffs on the night. Bouveur led the way, winning a team-high eight faceoffs.
The Huskies got on the board in the fourth minute of play to take an early 1-0 advantage. Less than a minute later UConn was able to find the back of the net once more to extend its lead. Latorella had the first scoring opportunity for the Sharks, but her shot missed wide. The Huskies would score once more in the first on a power play to take a 3-0 lead at the first intermission. af Bjur and Johnsson each had shots on goal at the end of the first period, but both were saved by Huskies goalkeeper.
The Sharks were able to shut out the Huskies for most of the second period, allowing just one goal, which came in the 19
th minute. Umpherville, Bergström, and Latorella fired off three shots that were all saved. Latorella had two more shots and Thomsen had another shot in the remainder of the second period that were all saved once more. Bailey made 19 saves, and the Sharks also killed off a power play in the second.
UConn would score twice more in the first seven minutes of the third period. The Sharks went on their first power play of the game, but were unable to convert. Umpherville scored her first career goal in the 15
th minute of the third to get the Sharks on the board. Bailey made four more saves to close out the game.
The Sharks return to the ice in two weeks when they host the reigning NCAA Division I champions University of Wisconsin in a two-game weekend series on October 18 and 19. Puck drop on the 18
th at Iceworks is slated for 3:00 p.m.
