SYOSSET, N.Y. – The Long Island University women's ice hockey team made history on Friday afternoon, playing its first game in the augural season as the first Division I ice hockey team on Long Island. Freshman goalkeeper
Mia McLeod had 49 saves after facing 53 shots, but the Sharks fell to the University of Connecticut 4-0.
The Sharks had nine shots in the game.
Abby Latorella led the team with three shots.

Stella Scott,
Grace Dima,
Linn Thomsen,
Carrigan Umpherville, and
Renee Hoffmann each finished with a shot in the game.
Behind McLeod's 49 saves, the defense killed four of the five powerplays UConn had.
Umpherville had the first shot of the day for the Sharks that was saved by the Huskies' goalkeeper. Dima also had a shot that was saved by UConn. The Sharks did not allow a goal until the 15
th minute of the first period when the Huskies took a 1-0 advantage, off a power play goal.
LIU was on its first power play of the game to start the second period, but was not able to convert. The Huskies wasted no time extending its lead early in the second right after killing the Sharks' powerplay. Scott had an opportunity to get the Sharks on the board, but her shot was saved by the goalkeeper. Eight minutes into the second period, UConn would take a three-goal advantage. The Sharks killed off two more powerplays and did not allow the Huskies to score again for the remainder of the period.
Ceremonial Puck Drop
A minute into the third period UConn scored its fourth goal of the day. Despite 19 more shots, McLeod did not allow another Husky goal for the remainder of the game. Hofmann had an opportunity on net, but her shot was once again saved. Latorella had another chance, but could not convert.
The Sharks return to the ice, tomorrow October 5, for its second game of the weekend against UConn. Puck drop at Iceworks is slated for 7:45 p.m.
