BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – Freshman
Papa Ndoye scored twice during the second half to lift the Long Island University men's soccer team to a critical 2-0 victory against Bryant University in Northeast Conference play on Monday, Oct. 28.
Monday's contest was a makeup from Sunday's washout against the Bulldogs. Despite playing 10 minutes before the match was postponed due to lightning and field conditions, the match was restarted due to NCAA regulations.
With the victory, LIU garnered another three points in the conference standings, moving past Bryant and into the No. 2 seed with three matches remaining.
The two sides found themselves in a chess match during the first half, with lots of tactical play in the midfield but limited offensive opportunities. Scoreless at the half, Bryant led LIU with two shots on goal to just one for the Sharks.
The Blue and Gold got out to a quick start during the second half, scoring during the 49th minute when Ndoye took a through ball from junior
Jonas Dovland and sped past a defender before carving a left-footed shot past the Bulldog keeper to give LIU a 1-0 advantage. 15 minutes later, senior
Kyle Parish launched a long ball upfield that bounced over a Bryant defender and Ndoye was able to elevate above the Bulldog keeper for a header that found an empty net to put the Sharks ahead 2-0.
LIU's defense took care of the rest, holding Bryant to zero shots on goal during the second half despite eight corner kick opportunities. Freshman
Demetri Skoumbakis needed just two saves to earn a shutout victory, his second clean sheets in three starts.
The Sharks continue their NEC slate on Friday, Nov. 1 when they travel to western Pennsylvania for a matchup with Robert Morris University beginning at 3:00 p.m.
