STATEN ISLAND, N.Y.- Freshman forward Hedda Einarsson's first career goal was the difference maker as the Long Island University women's soccer team defeated the Wagner Seahawks, 1-0 on a rainy Sunday afternoon.
Sunday's game marked freshman Kayla DeTreux's fourth shutout of the season. She finished the game saving all five Seahawk's shots on goal. Senior forward Julia Duffy led the offense with six shots, five of them were on goal. Sophomore forward Kendra Oldroyd, freshman defender Sanna Vidstroem, and Einarsson each finished the day with one shot on goal.
After a quiet opening 10 minutes of action, the Seahawks had its chance to get on the board with a shot on goal, but DeTreux saved it keeping it a scoreless game. Wagner had another chance, but just missed as Julia Fitzsimmons' shot hit the post. Duffy had the first chance for the Sharks on the day, but her shot was saved by the goalkeeper. Oldroyd had a chance in the 38th minute, but her shot was also saved.
After a scoreless first half, Wagner was able to get a couple shots off, but DeTreux stood tall and was not letting anything get passed her. Duffy had two more shots on goal, but it was once again saved, and the game remained scoreless.
In the 69th minute of action, Einarrson was able to capitalize on a deflection, finding the back of the empty net to give the Sharks a 1-0 lead. Duffy and Sanna would look to add to the lead, but the Wagner goalkeeper saved both those shots. Wagner had one last opportunity, but the shot was saved by the team. Duffy nearly extended the lead to two when she went 1v1 with the goalkeeper who would once again save the shot, but the Sharks were able to hold on to the 1-0 lead and secure the victory.
The Sharks return to action on Friday, October 25th when they visit Sacred Heart in a Northeast Conference matchup. Game time against the Pioneers is set for 3:00 p.m.
