Jan Griga

Jan Griga has experienced that winning feeling each and every year of his time coaching at LIU. LIU won the NEC crown twice when he served as an assistant in 2017 and 2018, and have since gone two-for-two since his elevation to head coach in 2019. He has been voted the NEC Coach of the Year twice by his peers, in 2019 and 2021.

Under Griga's guidance, the Sharks men's tennis program finished 14-10 and 5-3 in the NEC in its first season of existence. LIU defeated No. 5 Sacred Heart in the NEC Tournament, 4-2.

Three student-athletes qualifyed for all-NEC: Ben Brandherm, Alessandro D'Anna, and Philip Hilble.

Brandherm earned a spot on the first team (singles) while D'Anna and Hilble made the all-rookie team.

In 2021, he guided LIU to a perfect 9-0 dual match record that culminated in the program's fourth-consecutive NEC championship and sixth in school annals with a 4-1 win over Bryant in the final. He also coached three All-NEC first teamers, including NEC Player of the Year Sofiya Kuzina.

Since Griga's arrival on the scene as an assistant, LIU has put together a 60-23 overall record and incredible 33-1 mark against conference rivals.

In his first season as head coach, Griga guided LIU to a 14-8 overall record, and an undefeated conference record en route to capturing the program’s third consecutive NEC Championship title. Griga’s squad concluded 2018-19 season with a trip to the opening round of the NCAA Tournament.

Griga earned NEC Coach of the Year honors after a successful first season as head coach. He also mentored three-time NEC Player of the Year Anna Grigoryan, in addition to a league-best four All-NEC honors earned by Jessica Brzozowska, Ana Leonte, Malin Leysen, and Sasha Bollweg.
