Shawn Patchell

LIU Athletics Director Dr. William E. Martinov Jr. announced in July of 2021 that Shawn Patchell was tabbed to lead LIU's men's volleyball program.

In his first season, Patchell guided the Sharks to a 13 wins, including a 5-3 mark at home. The team won five of its final six games of the season, three of which coming in straight sets.

A renowned coach at the Division I and II levels, as well as in club volleyball and with USA Volleyball, Patchell comes to LIU after eight seasons at the helm of Concordia University Irvine, where he guided the program's move from NAIA to NCAA Division II. Over the past two decades, Patchell has accumulated a 230-145-1 record as an NCAA head coach.

"I am honored to be the first coach of LIU Men's Volleyball and I look forward to building a successful program with a wonderful support staff on such a vibrant campus. It has been a pleasure working with Dr. Martinov and Mr. Ribner in kicking-off this inaugural season."

Patchell joins LIU after serving as the head coach at Concordia from 2013-21. During that time, he helped elevate the program from NAIA to NCAA Division II status. Once elevated, Patchell's teams at Concordia earned national rankings, collected landmark victories over ranked teams and established CUI as a team that competed at the highest level against opponents from Division I schools.

Patchell finished his time at CUI with a 118-98 overall record as head coach. While overseeing the Eagles, his teams claimed victory over nationally ranked opponents multiple times. In a shortened 2020 season, his squad claimed four victories, including statement wins over No. 7 UC Irvine and No. 8 Grand Canyon in a span of 48 hours.  CUI also took down No. 13 CSUN and No. 15 UC San Diego, and swept the season series against USC, including a 3-0 sweep at USC's arena.

During his time at CUI, he coached the school's first first-team All-league honorees, including athletes who earned AVCA All-America Honorable Mention honors. He also led CUI to a second-straight NAIA National Conference Championship appearance at the NAIA National Invitational. He was voted NAIA National Conference Coach of the Year and coached two NAIA All-Americans.

Patchell also spent time as the head coach at DIII Marymount University (2012-13). Prior to Marymount, he was the head coach at NCAA DI powerhouse Brigham Young University from 2006-2010. He was an assistant with the Cougars from 2002-2006, including the team's two league championships in 2003 & 2004, and the NCAA National Champions in 2004.

Patchell's involvement with USA Volleyball is extensive as well. He was the head coach of the Men's National Team in the spring of 2012 at the Pan American Games in the Dominican Republic where they won the gold medal. He worked as an assistant with the Men's National Team in 2011 and 2010 and was the head coach of the Boy's Junior National Team in 2009 and head coach of the Boy's Youth National Team in 2008, where they took a bronze medal at the NORCECA Zone Championships in San Salvador, El Salvador. He coached the Pan Am team again in 2013 in Mexico City.

Patchell began his coaching career in 1994 as an assistant coach at Irvine High School, and was the head coach at Laguna Beach High School from 1997-2002. His boys' team won the Pacific Coast League in 1997 and 1998, and the girls won the conference in 1997, 1998, 2000, 2001, 2019, 2020 and 2021. Patchell's collegiate coaching career began in 1995 as a graduate assistant at UC Irvine.

A member of BYU's first NCAA men's volleyball team, Patchell was a starter all four years during his tenure in Provo. He went on to play professionally in Spain on the indoor and sand volleyball circuits before returning to the states and beginning his coaching career in 1993.  He has also coached club volleyball since 2009.

Shawn and his wife Davis have four children: Jordan, Sage, Soren and Kai.
