WEST HAVEN, Conn. — The Long Island University softball team (12-25, 11-0 NEC) earned wins in both games of Friday's doubleheader against the University of New Haven, defeating the Chargers by scores of 3-0 and 4-1 on the road.
In Friday's opening game, LIU gained a 1-0 lead off an RBI single by junior Jen Rodriguez. The one-run lead held until the top of the fifth inning, when senior Devon Medina extended the LIU lead with a solo home run to left field that put LIU ahead 2-0.
Searching for insurance, senior Nyae' Villalta put the Sharks ahead 3-0 with an RBI single that send home junior Lily Hinkle.
Rodriguez led the way with three hits in the win, while senior Sarah Wall earned her fourth win in the circle with six strikeouts and three hits surrendered across four innings. Sophomore Ava Fairbanks earned her first win of the season, pitching the final three innings with one strikeout.
In Friday's nightcap, New Haven took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning and held that lead until the top of the seventh inning, when freshman Anais Soto tied the game with an RBI double to send the game into extra innings.
In the top of the eighth, LIU tallied on runs with an RBI single by junior Jaedyn Lincoln, a sacrifice fly by junior Kaylee Clarkson, and an RBI single by Soto. Fairbanks retired the side in order to seal the win in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Hinkle led LIU with three hits and two stolen bases, while Soto delivered a team-high two RBI in the win. Fairbanks earned the win, pitching 4.2 innings while surrendering one hit and no runs.
LIU takes on New Haven on Saturday at noon in West Haven, Connecticut.
