Sharks Score Double-Digit Runs in 4th-Straight Game, Defeat Saint Peter’s

Lily Hinkle leads LIU with three hits, four RBI

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — The Long Island University softball team (20-30, 18-3 NEC) wrapped up non-conference play with a dominant win over Saint Peter's University on Tuesday, defeating the Peacocks 14-1 in Brooklyn.

LIU scored six runs in the bottom of the first inning on Saturday, opening scoring with an RBI single by senior Devon Medina. Four at-bats later, the Sharks added another run with an RBI single by Gigi Clavel. A throwing error at third base allowed junior Jen Rodriguez to score, extending LIU's lead to 3-0, before a bases-loaded walk by Kaylee Clarkson added another Shark run.

Junior Lily Hinkle, who was named NEC Player of the Week earlier on Tuesday, recorded her second hit of the inning with a two-RBI single to give the Sharks a 6-0 lead after the first inning.

LIU scratched another run across in the bottom of the second inning, as Clavel's second RBI of the day came off a double, sending home Rodriguez for a 7-0 LIU lead.

The Sharks opened the flood gates in the bottom of the third inning, adding seven more runs. Rodriguez delivered a two-RBI double to extend the lead to 9-0, with another bases-loaded walk by Clavel pushing the lead to double digits. A two-RBI single by sophomore Ava Fairbanks, who received NEC Pitcher of the Week honors on Tuesday, was followed by another two-RBI hit by Hinkle, who doubled to left field for a 14-0 LIU lead.

Saint Peter's added a run in the top of the fourth inning, giving the game its 14-1 final score.

Hinkle led LIU in the win, going three-for-three at the plate with a team-high four RBI, followed closely by Clavel, who went two-for-two at the plate with three RBI. Senior Sarah Wall earned her seventh win in the circle, pitching four innings with one hit surrendered, no earned runs, and two strikeouts.

LIU closes NEC play with a series against Mercyhurst University in Brooklyn this weekend. First pitch of the opening game is at 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 2.
