BROOKLYN, N.Y. — The Long Island University men's volleyball team (5-8, 1-1 NEC) bounced back with a win over Saint Francis University on Saturday night, defeating the Red Flash 3-1 at home.
Saint Francis claimed the first set of Saturday's match, winning the first set 25-17 to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
With the Sharks holding a 13-12 advantage midway through the second set, LIU scored five of the next six points to take an 18-13 lead in the second set before eventually riding out to a 25-20 win over the Red Flash, tying the match at one.
Saturday's third set was a back-and-forth contest, with LIU holding a narrow 17-16 lead late in the set. The Sharks scored on eight of the next 10 rallies to go up 2-1 in the match, winning the third set 25-18.
LIU dominated to begin Saturday's fourth frame, claiming an early 9-1 lead over Saint Francis. A Saint Francis service error wrapped up the final set, with LIU earning a 25-11 win.
Freshman Ike Vernon and senior Kale Spencer tied for a game-high 19 kills, while redshirt sophomore Heston Cabinian tallied 11 kills in the win. Sophomore Owen Holowecky totaled a career-high 46 assists, while Spencer (11), Vernon (10), and senior Slater Fuhrman (10) all finished with double-digit digs. Cabinian led LIU with six total blocks.
LIU returns to the court to face Roberts Wesleyan University on Tuesday, March 3, at 6 p.m. in Brooklyn.
