Julia Trainor and
Lindsey Lucia each scored three goals and the Long Island University women's lacrosse team (2-2) defeated Manhattan University (0-4), 12-6, on Wednesday afternoon at Shark Stadium. Trainor also tallied two assists in a five-point effort, along with six ground balls, four caused turnovers, and six draw controls.
Catherine Batterberry scored two goals and
Selia Lyons added four assists.
Ally Taranto,
Erin Harkins,
Caitlyn Guilfoil, and
Alexa Nuzzi each added a goal for the Sharks.
LIU controlled from the start, taking a 1-0 lead just over a minute into the game on Lucia's first goal. The Sharks scored the game's first five goals and led 5-1 at halftime, after finally allowing Manhattan to break through with 31 seconds remaining in the first half.
Near the end of the third period, a three-goal run by the Jaspers cut the Sharks lead to 8-5. After taking a time out, LIU rattled off three straight goals, capped by Trainor's final goal of the afternoon to take an 11-5 lead early in the fourth quarter. The Sharks led wire-to-wire.
LIU led 18-14 in shots on goal and 20-18 in ground balls. Redshirt senior goalie
Skyler Fig made 11 saves.
The Sharks return to action on Saturday at the University of Vermont. Opening draw is scheduled for 2 p.m.
