EAST MEADOW, N.Y. - The Long Island University men's ice hockey team (12-15-1) got back in the win column with a defeat of Stonehill College on Saturday afternoon, scoring three goals in the third period to claim a 5-3 win.
Stonehill took an early 1-0 lead with a goal at the 3:59 mark, though the Sharks responded to tie the game on a power play goal by senior Brett Rylance, assisted by sophomore Nick Bernardo and sophomore Trent Powell, under four minutes later.
Midway through the second half, Rylance's second goal of the game, while the Sharks were shorthanded, gave LIU a 2-1 lead over Stonehill. Sophomore Brennan Nelson and senior Trevor Griebel assisted on the lead-changing goal.
Both team's offenses erupted in Saturday's third period; first Stonehill tied and recaptured the lead with back-to-back goals at the 1:32 and 7:36 minute marks, but the Skyhawk lead was short-lived. Bernardo tied the game with a power play goal at the 9:08 mark, with assists by Sixten Jennersjö and Powell, while senior Casey McDonald, assisted by Griebel and freshman Jaden Dyke put the Sharks ahead with a goal less than two minutes later.
Sophomore Isaac Lambert gave the Sharks some breathing room with a goal at the 12:37 mark in the third period, with assists by senior Noah Serdachny and sophomore J.R Perdion, giving LIU its eventual 5-3 win over Stonehill.
In the net, sophomore Daniel Duris posted 26 saves in LIU's win over Stonehill.
The Sharks return to the ice on Friday, Feb. 20, at 7 p.m. when they travel to face Stonehill in Boston.
