Nate Benoit Hat Trick Propels LIU to Sweep of Alaska Anchorage

Sharks win 4th consecutive game

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Junior defenseman Nate Benoit recorded a hat trick and the Long Island University men's ice hockey team (11-12-1) topped the University of Alaska Anchorage (3-19-1), 4-3, on Tuesday night at the Avis Alaska Sports Complex. The Sharks completed a three-game sweep of the Seawolves and stretched their winning streak to four consecutive games.

Trailing 1-0 late in the first and on the power play, Benoit scored the first goal of his collegiate career at 15:03 of the period, assisted by Trevor Griebel and Noah Serdachny.

LIU again trailed in the second period and tied the game 2-2 when Serdachny scored a short-handed goal at 2:46 of the frame, with assists by Brett Rylance and Blake Dangos.

Serdachny's goal sparked a three-goal second-period outburst that put the Sharks ahead 4-2. Benoit scored another power play goal at 5:45 of the second, assisted by Griebel and Serdachny, and completed the hat trick with a power play goal at 11:30 of the second with assists by Serdachny and Onni Leppanen.

Serdachny led the Sharks with four points. Benoit (3 points) and Griebel (2 points) also recorded multi-point games.

After allowing a late third period goal, the Sharks held off the UAA comeback to complete the 4-3 win. Sophomore goaltender Daniel Duris made 20 saves, and Benoit added a blocked shot in the final minute with the Seawolves skating 6-on-5.

The game featured 15 penalties as LIU went 3-for-6 on power play chances. All seven goals in the game were scored on the power play or shorthanded.

The Sharks outshot the Seawolves 29-23 and won 28 of 48 faceoffs.

Up next, LIU continues its Alaska road trip with a weekend pair at The University of Alaska Fairbanks on Jan. 30 and 31. Puck drop of Friday night's weekend opener is scheduled for 11 p.m. eastern.
