BROOKVILLE, N.Y. - Doug Trani has been named Deputy Director of Athletics for Administration and Compliance, Long Island University Director of Athletics Elliott Charles announced on Thursday. Trani joins LIU after 18 seasons as an athletics administrator, and 22 total years, at St. John's University.

"We are excited to welcome Doug and his family to Shark Nation," said Charles. "Doug brings incredible experience as a seasoned athletics administrator, and we are looking forward to the positive impact that he will have on various areas of the department."

Trani's second stint at St. John's began in September of 2007 as the Assistant Athletic Director for Compliance. Over his 18-year tenure, Trani was promoted twice, becoming the Associate Athletic Director for Compliance in 2011 and the Senior Associate Athletic Director for Human Resources in 2023.

In his various administrative roles, Trani served as the sport administrator for the men's and women's fencing teams and the men's lacrosse team, served as university liaison to the Big East Conference and NCAA, and oversaw all aspects of the department's compliance systems, among other noteworthy responsibilities. In 2019, Trani was honored with the Outstanding Administrative Achievement Medal awarded by SJU's president.

Trani joined St. John's after working the 2006-2007 season as Columbia University's Director of Compliance. He first joined St. John's in September 2002 as a graduate assistant in the compliance office, earning a full-time role in 2003, before departing for Columbia in August 2006.

Trani's athletics administration career began in 1999 at Globe Institute of Technology (NJCAA DI), where doubled as Assistant Athletic Director and Assistant Men's Basketball Coach.

"As a former college student-athlete, coach, and athletic administrator with 23 years of experience in New York City, I bring with me an understanding that teamwork is the foundation for reaching goals, especially when they appear unattainable," said Trani. "I am honored and grateful to join the LIU community and contribute to the continued growth and success of LIU Athletics. My family and I are also very excited to meet Finley. Go Sharks!"

Trani graduated with a bachelor's degree in social studies secondary education from New York University in 1999, where he co-captained the men's basketball team and competed in three consecutive NCAA Tournaments (1996-1999). He completed his master's in the School of Education at St. John's in 2003.

Trani, his wife Michele, and their sons Mason and Miles, reside in Northport, New York.
