LIU Baseball's Season Comes to a Close in NEC Championship Game

Max Samson led LIU with 4-for-5 outing despite 6-5 loss to CCSU in NEC Championship

WAPPINGERS FALLS, N.Y. — After pushing CCSU to a winner-takes-all game in the NEC Championship with a 8-7 win earlier Sunday, LIU dropped the deciding game 6-5 as the season came to a close.

After allowing three runs in the first, the Sharks soared back, first chipping away at the deficit before eventually taking the lead. LIU scored their first run of the game in the bottom of the first via a Benjamin Fierenzi RBI ground out, and then Max Samson made it a 3-2 game in the second with an RBI single. The center fielder's clutch hit was part of a 4-for-5 day to lead the Sharks.

With two ducks on the pond later in the fourth, Jarod Wade singled home Samson and Joseph Durso to help LIU take a 4-3 lead.

CCSU would regain the lead in the midst of a 5-4 score by the sixth inning. However, Samson's banner day continued with another run scoring single in the eighth to help his team tie things up at five apiece.

Torin Kassebaum turned in an excellent relief outing for LIU, going five and two-thirds innings, walking none and allowing just two hits and one run as he paced the Sharks and the game went into extra innings. Unfortunately, that same run proved to be the winning one as CCSU scored on a wild pitch in the twelfth to secure the lead, and eventually, the victory.

Following the game, Ryan Rivera, Garrett Yawn, and Nicholas Finarelli were all named to the NEC All-Tournament Team for the Sharks.

LIU's season has come to a close as the NEC's number one seed in the regular season after tying the program-record for most conference wins with a 24-6 record.
