Lockdown Defense Leads LIU to Season Sweep of Wagner on Senior Night

Sharks hold NYC rival & reigning NEC Champs to 28.6-percent FG shooting

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The Long Island University men's basketball team (15-15, 11-4 NEC) held Wagner College (14-14, 6-9) to 28.6-percent shooting and the Sharks downed the Seahawks, 60-47, on Thursday night at the Steinberg Wellness Center. As LIU celebrated Senior Night, honoring the four-man class of Malachi Davis, Terell Strickland, Jamal Fuller, and Brent Davis, the Sharks picked up their fifth consecutive victory and completed the season sweep of the reigning Northeast Conference champions.

The win also brought LIU back to .500 overall for the first time since Nov. 25, when the Sharks were 3-3 on the heels of a victory over the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. With 11 NEC wins this season, the preseason No. 5 pick has won 11 games in conference play for the first time since the 2021-2022 season.

After a low-scoring and back-and-forth first half, LIU took a 28-22 lead into the locker room on Strickland's buzzer-beating layup.

In the second half, the Sharks pulled away, opening an 18-point lead with 8:21 to play after 17-5 game-sealing run.

Malachi Davis led four Sharks in double figures with 17 points. Blake Lander and Fuller followed with 13 apiece. Strickland scored 10 points, with five rebounds, four assists, a steal, and a block.

For the game, LIU shot 43.2 percent from the floor and 85.7 percent from the free throw line (18-21). Defensively, the Sharks held the Seahawks to 14-for-49 from the field and five of 23 from the 3-point line (21.7%). LIU outrebounded Wagner, 38-27.

The Sharks return to action on Saturday at Fairleigh Dickinson University. Opening tipoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. and television coverage will be available on NEC Front Row.
