BROOKLYN, N.Y. - The Long Island University women's volleyball team (13-7, 10-0 NEC) continued its unbeaten streak to begin conference play on Wednesday night, defeating the University of New Haven Chargers in three sets at home.
With Wednesday's win, LIU's win streak was extended to 11 consecutive games, the longest win streak in the Shark era of the program.
LIU recorded a team hitting percentage of .355 in Wednesday's win, highlighted by a .688 hitting percentage by junior Yasmeen Muhammad, who recorded 12 kills on 16 total attacks. Muhammad entered the match ranked 11th in NCAA Division I in hitting percentage on the season (.424)
Sophomore Sara Garcia had a hitting percentage of .444 in the win, while junior Sara van Gisteren finished the match with a hitting percentage of .393.
The Sharks won the first two sets by scores of 25-18 before putting away the Chargers with a 25-21 win in Wednesday's third and final set.
van Gisteren led the Sharks with 15 kills, followed by 12 from Muhammad and nine by sophomore Bella Correia. Muhammad led the Sharks with four total blocks, while senior Karly Klaer posted 36 assists and sophomore Miabella Musignac recorded a team-high 15 digs.
LIU travels to Saint Francis University for a two-game set, beginning on Friday, Oct. 31, at 6 p.m.
