Sharks Rout Canisius 6-1 to Earn 1st Win of Season

J.R. Perdion & Brett Rylance each score twice as HC Brendan Riley earns 1st career win

BUFFALO, N.Y. - J.R Perdion and Brett Rylance each scored two goals and the Long Island University men's ice hockey team (1-2-0) downed Canisius College (3-1-0), 6-1, on Saturday night at LECOM Harborcenter. The victory was the first in Brendan Riley's head coaching career as the Sharks and Golden Griffins split the weekend pair.

"Really proud of the way our guys responded tonight," said Riley. "Right from the first puck drop, I thought we imposed our will on a very good Canisius team. We were able to get the first one and never look back. All 20 guys were big contributors and we proved to ourselves how good it can look when we play our hardest and execute at a high level."

LIU opened the scoring at the 9:43 mark of the first period, when Perdion scored off an assist by Garrett Valk. Luca Leighton followed with an unassisted goal 58 seconds later, giving the Sharks a 2-0 lead at the first intermission.

In the second period, Perdion scored his second goal of the night (8:52), assisted by Jaden Dyke, giving LIU a 3-0 lead. Rylance added to the lead with back-to-back goals giving the Sharks a 5-0 edge through 40 minutes. Dylan Kinch assisted both of Rylance's goals, along with assists by Trevor Griebel on Rylance's first goal (12:54) and Sixten Jennersjö on his second goal (18:55).

Less than 30 seconds into the third period, after a late-second period cross-checking call against Trey Funk of Canisius, Noah Serdachny's power-play goal gave LIU a 6-0 lead. Perdion and Rylance both tallied assists on Serdachny's goal, each registering a team-best three points in the game.

Sophomore goaltender Daniel Duris earned the win in net, making 22 saves and allowing a lone power-play goal in the third period.

For the game, the Sharks outshot the Golden Griffins 34-23.

LIU returns to action this Friday, Oct. 17, at No. 4 Penn State University in the first game of a weekend pair. Opening face-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Pegula Ice Arena.
