BROOKLYN, N.Y. — LIU Sharks women's volleyball picked up their first win of the season in a gritty, five-set match against Quinnipiac by a 3-2 score (25-23, 17-25, 25-21, 20-25, 15-10).
Senior
Camelia Melendez was honored before the game after picking up the 1,000th kill of her career over the weekend against Youngstown State. Her parents, Adlin and Angel, presented her with a commemorative ball.
Melendez carried that momentum into tonight's game as she led the Sharks with 21 kills and applied pressure on the Bobcats' back line. The trio of Melendez, freshman
Bella Correia, and
Bria Plante were a problem for Quinnipiac, combining for 41 kills.
"It was a great team win with everyone really contributing to this hard-fought victory," said head coach
Amable Martinez. "Our young team has gone through some learning experiences, especially with dropping two five-set matches over the weekend, but I am happy we were able to pull it out at home against a great MAAC championship opponent in Quinnipiac."
Alasha Colon continued her impressive start to the season with 35 digs against just four receiving errors. LIU also dominated at the next, more than doubling the block total of the Bobcats (25-12).
The Sharks move to 1-3 on the season and will take the court next when they head to Tennessee on September 6 with another game that weekend against UCLA in Knoxville.
