Luka Stanzani completed 11 of 24 passes for 80 yards. Ludovick Choquette led the Sharks with 62 rushing yards, while Pat Bowen added 41 yards on the ground.
The Sharks fell behind 17-0 at halftime, but their defense stepped up in the second half, allowing Villanova only one score while outscoring the Wildcats 10-7.
LIU got on the scoreboard with 12:12 left in the fourth quarter, executing a four-play, 75-yard drive. Stanzani started the drive in the shotgun, completing passes to Brandon Niemenski, Michael Love, and Evan Brooks. The drive concluded with a 25-yard touchdown run by Bowen.
Later in the fourth quarter, the Sharks mounted a nine-play, 41-yard drive that ended with a 42-yard field goal by Michael Coney.
The Sharks will travel to Pittsburgh for their first conference matchup of the season against Duquesne on Saturday, Oct. 5, at Rooney Field.
