MORGANTOWN, W.V. — It took a total of seven overtimes and two sudden-death goals but the LIU men's water polo team pulled out victories in both of its games at the Salem Invite on Saturday.
In their first contest, LIU squared off with the University of Toronto in a high-scoring, fast-paced match that featured a six-goal fourth quarter from the Sharks that forced overtime. It was in the sudden-death frame that freshman
Jack French broke the tie and put LIU on top.
The next game was an early evening slugfest with Mount St. Mary's that leaned more heavily on defense and physicality. This time it wasn't LIU who came back, but rather four goals from Mount St. Mary's forced the extra frames.
Senior
Sam Odenkirk was the hero in the second game as he threw in a golden goal to give LIU the Saturday sweep. The win for LIU was their first over a D1 program in men's water polo in the program's short history.
Josep Jodra Muñoz tallied 11 goals on the day, while
Riyad Shehadeh added seven goals and French had six.
Manuel Diez Teran earned the win in net for both contests.
The Sharks are back in the water tomorrow with games against Johns Hopkins and Gannon. Both games can be watched on the Western Water Polo Association website.
