LIU Men's Soccer Scores Late to Tie Georgetown

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Second-half goals from Papa Sow and captain Alan Martinez gave LIU an impressive 2-2 draw on the road against Georgetown on Saturday afternoon.

Coming off a 2-1 win at home over Fairfield earlier in the week, the Sharks saw the Hoyas come out rabid with an aggressive style of play that led to a 1-0 halftime lead.

An early second-half goal from Georgetown put LIU in what felt like an insurmountable two-goal deficit, but these Sharks were still chomping at the bit and made its move to get back into game.

In the 67th minute, a cross from Jesper Mikkelsen found Sow, who headed one past the goalkeeper to cut the Hoyas' lead to one.

With about five minutes left, it was Martinez who took it upon himself to tie the game and earn the draw for LIU. The midfielder punched a beautiful, high-arcing shot from the left side of the box that cleared the keeper and found the back of the net.

"Our boys played like men tonight," emphasized head coach Michael Mordocco about his team's gutty performance. "They played with discipline and maturity. They (Georgetown) is the best team we have ever played and Brian (Wiese) is one of the best coaches in the country."

The second-half goals from Sow and Martinez displayed the fortitude this group has, according to Mordocco. "We could have gone into a shell but chose not to quit, and our team culture is electric. The guys off the bench were unbelievable and I am extremely proud of this result and we will look to build on it."

LIU (3-2-2) returns to LIU Soccer Park where they will face Monmouth on Tuesday, September 17, at 2 p.m. on NEC Front Row.
