STORRS, Conn. — A hard-fought matchup between LIU men's soccer and the UConn Huskies ended in a 0-0 draw at a crowded Joseph J. Morrone Stadium on Sunday evening.
The Sharks knew they would be in for a physical test with the Huskies and proved their mettle in this back-and-forth affair. UConn showed their physicality throughout the match, picking up 10 fouls before the final whistle, with three players earning yellow cards.
LIU avoided some early pressure from UConn, though the Huskies couldn't find the net for the entire first half. A late first-half scoring chance for
Sam Keogan was stopped by the Huskies and the teams went into the half tied up at zero.
The tables were turned in the second half with LIU pushing the pace early, however they were unable to get on the board. UConn made a push late in the contest but Sharks goalkeeper
Eoin Gawronski made a key save to cement the draw.
"I am super proud of the boys," exlcaimed associate head coach
Tyler Botte. "It was quite a team effort to make life tough for UConn to create chances. They (UConn) have quality players all over the field and we believe they left some moments frustrated. It was really a tremendous experience to get this result for a second straight season at one of the most storied programs in the country."
Gawronski earned his second clean sheet of the season, while reigning NEC Rookie of the Week
Stephane Njike and
Saïdou Diallo led the Sharks with two shots apiece.
LIU moves to 2-0-1 on the season as do the Huskies, with the Sharks heading back home to Brookville to host the 2-0-2 UMass Lowell River Hawks. They kickoff that late afternoon game at 4 p.m. at LIU Soccer Park on Wednesday, September 4, on NEC Front Row.
