HACKENSACK, N.J. — The LIU women's basketball team clinched the six seed in its final regular season game of the season on Thursday and traveled to three seed FDU Monday night.
The Sharks started off hot, grabbing an early seven point lead in the first quarter. FDU would battle back as they regained the lead at the end of the first with LIU close behind.
The Sharks continued to shoot well in the second but the Knights were able to get to the free throw line more often and knocked down all 10 opportunities from the charity stripe as LIU trailed by nine at half.
The second half was taken over by the Knights and even though the Sharks went on a nice run at the end of the fourth the deficit was too much and they fell 71-59.
Mariah Elohim scored a team-high 16 points and grabbed two rebounds.
In their final collegiate game, Ashley Austin scored 15 points while shooting 50% from the floor and tallying a team-high five assists while Samantha Bailey led LIU in rebounds with seven.
Emaia O'Brien scored 11, shooting 3-5 from three and recording two steals.
Janessa Williams finished her freshman campaign with a solid showing, scoring 12 with two rebounds and a team-high three assists.
