CORAL GABLES, Fla. — Noah Sorensen produced the biggest swing of his young collegiate career on Saturday night.
Sorensen delivered a tiebreaking homer to lead off the top of the ninth and
Seth Surrett added a sacrifice fly later in the frame as the LIU baseball team defeated Miami, 4-2, at Alex Rodriguez Park.
Sorensen, a redshirt freshman who joined the Sharks this season from UConn, took Drew Dwyer deep on the second pitch of the top of the ninth to break a 2-all tie.
It was the first hit and RBI of Sorensen's collegiate career.
"Going into the at-bat, it was a new pitcher. He was a heavy slider guy with experience," Sorensen said. "The first pitch I chased a slider low and out. So I knew he was coming back with that one. He hung his slider and I got the barrel out in front and was able to put a good swing on it."
Handed a two-run cushion for the bottom of the ninth,
Jack VanDoran earned the save while working for the second straight night. VanDoran had tossed 39 pitches on Friday night in relief.
Matt Galli, a freshman from Mount Sinai, earned his first collegiate win after tossing scoreless frames in the seventh and eighth.
Jake Mastillo's solo homer in the top of the eighth had pulled LIU even at 2.
"The team has had some tough moments early this season, but I loved the way we competed and never gave in," coach
Dan Pirillo said.
The teams play the rubber game of the three-game series on Sunday at 1 p.m. in Coral Gables.
