EAST MEADOW, N.Y. — Hosting its second annual Teddy Bear Toss Game, LIU men's hockey took advantage of the momentum that comes with the holiday season to pick up a 3-1 win over Stonehill.
The Sharks took control when
Austin Brimmer scored a goal midway through the second period to give his team a 1-0 lead.
Onni Leppänen, who won the NCAA Division I Independent Hockey Rookie of the Month award in November, continued to thrive by scoring a goal in the third. When Stonehill cut LIU's lead in half to 2-1 later in the final period,
Anthony Lucarelli emerged to score his first goal of the season, putting the finishing touches on the 3-1 win for the Sharks.
As part of the Teddy Bear Toss, LIU men's hockey collected new teddy bears and stuffed animals to be donated to Northwell Cohen Children's Medical Center, welcoming fans to throw their stuffed animals on the ice after the first LIU goal. Volunteers from Northwell took the ice to collect and bag the teddies.
LIU and Stonehill play one more at Northwell Health Ice Center on Saturday, Dec. 14 at 7:30 p.m.
