BROOKLYN, N.Y. — LIU picked up a 3-0 win over Central Connecticut State on Friday night, earning its eighth sweep of the campaign and improving to 9-4 against conference opponents.
The good vibes around this contest went well beyond the box score, however, as the Sharks took time out to honor a number of special athletes as part of Senior Day.
The players who were celebrated pregame for their accomplishments and special contributions to the program included:
- Celine Mukura, a four-year member of the LIU women's volleyball team who has been named to the NEC All-Academic Team three times.
- Jordan MacDonald, who has also been a part of the LIU women's volleyball team for four years and is known for the energy she brings, often recognized as "the ultimate teammate."
- Bria Plante, the team captain and graduate transfer who had totaled 220 kills, 189 blocks, and 46 digs through her two years suiting up for the Sharks heading into Friday's game.
- Cristal Paulino Rubel, who in addition to currently leading the NEC in blocks per set this season, tallied 487 kills, 101 digs, and 261 blocks over her collegiate career heading into Friday's game.
- Camelia Melendez, a two-time First Team All-NEC and All-Tournament member, who was also named MVP of the tournament last season.
- Alasha Colon, last season's NEC Defensive Player of the Year who just last week became the 12th active player in Division 1 volleyball to eclipse 2000 digs for her career.
Against the Blue Devils on Friday night, Melendez led the Sharks with 8 kills in the win. The two teams will match up once more on Saturday, Nov. 16 at 1 p.m.
