NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. — The LIU women's volleyball team put up a fight against undefeated Fordham on Friday.
Down two sets to one, the Sharks took the Rams to the brink in a back-and-forth battle, but fell in four sets 14-25, 25-21, 13-25, 23-25.
"It was a little bit of Jekyll and Hyde today," head coach
Amable Martinez said. "We couldn't put it together in the first and third sets, but played our game in the second and fourth. That was a tough opponent out there and even though we came up short, we proved that we can compete with teams like that."
Amaris Smith and
Camelia Melendez were two of the best players on the court for LIU.
Smith recorded 13 kills, two blocks, a service ace, and added nine digs. Melendez led the Sharks in kills with 16, while tallying an assist and 14 digs, which was second on the team.
Alasha Colon and
Tiana Brasby were both stellar defensively. Colon recorded 23 more digs to add on to her already impressive stat line, while the freshman Brasby tallied 11.
Bria Plante played very well in her second start of the season. The Alpharetta, Ga. native recorded six kills and six blocks.
Selina Ko
ç led the Sharks with 34 assists, bringing her season total to 167.
"In this part of the season there's a lot of learning, especially with a group that's playing their first season together," Martinez said. "I'm excited for what's to come."
The Sharks wrap up their trip to New Rochelle on Saturday afternoon when they take on host Iona at 2 p.m.
