GARDEN CITY, N.Y. — Shortly after the LIU men's soccer team defeated UConn on Friday night,
Michael Mordocco warned his team to avoid a letdown when they resumed play on Labor Day against VMI.
LIU responded with four second-half goals in a 4-0 win against VMI on Monday at Motamed Field.
André Puente,
Emil Jaaskelainen,
Ben Assane Fall and
Papa Sow all scored in the victory.
Eoin Gawronski earned his second straight shutout.
Freshman
Joshua Saavedra earned his first career assist as he set up Jaaskelainen's goal.
It marked the most goals in a half and the largest margin of victory since a 4-0 win against Stonehill on Oct. 2 last season.
The Sharks outshot the Keydets 26-6, including 9-1 in shots on goal.
"I knew if we could get one, we would get a second one," Mordocco said. "It took us a lot longer than I thought to get the first one. The first half we had three or four really good chances. We went into halftime, had a chat with the guys, and we came out really sharp."
Like with UConn, LIU (3-1) faces another stern test on Thursday when it faces host Akron at 7 p.m. The Zips entered a Monday night game having outscored opponents 8-1, including a victory against No. 7 Vermont.
