JERSEY CITY, N.J. — The LIU women's soccer team christened the 2023-24 athletic calendar with a resounding win.
Gina Proviano,
Stephanie Schubert and
Noa Bartels van Bosbeek scored goals and
Keely Thomas produced a shutout as the Sharks blanked host Saint Peter's, 3-0, in Thursday's season opener at Lincoln Park Turf Field.
It marked the program's largest scoring output and largest margin of victory since back-to-back 4-0 wins in October 2019, against Mount St. Mary's and Merrimack.
"The girls came out with a lot of energy today," second-year coach
Lucy Gillett said. "They showed what we've been working on for the past two and a half weeks. There's definitely a lot to still work on, but that's part of building a team. It's going to take a little time to get to where we need to be, but this is definitely a strong, strong start to the season."
Proviano, a co-captain, opened the scoring in the 25th minute. A pair of freshmen then expanded the lead.
Schubert, a Long Islander, scored her first collegiate goal off the bench in the 30th minute. Bartels van Bosbeek in the second half also tallied her first collegiate goal.
"I got the ball on my right foot and faked like I was going to shoot with my right, and then I cut in and shot with my left," Proviano said. "A little bit of deception."
Thomas, a redshirt freshman transfer from Longwood, was credited with one save in the shutout.
Thomas, Bartels van Bosbeek,
Matilda Boyle,
Paige Letourneau,
Allison Bennett and
Betty Hall all started in their collegiate debuts.
And things clicked for the Sharks, despite only coming together as a group two and a half weeks ago.
LIU outshot Saint Peter's 15-2, including 8-1 in shots on goal.
"We've been working hard to possess the ball," co-captain
Caroline Nuttall said. "We showed that a lot during this game. We were getting to goal and finishing our chances and working together as a team."
