LORETTO, Pa. — The NEC softball postseason championship will go down to a final game!
Already having clinched the conference's NCAA tourney berth, the Sharks defeated Merrimack, 7-5, on Saturday.
That avenged a loss to the Warriors early Friday and sets up a winner-take-all championship game between the teams on Sunday at 10 a.m.
The finale originally had been planned for Saturday, but an extended rain delay during Saturday's first game prompted the switch.
In Saturday's game against Merrimack, LIU overcame a 5-4 deficit with a three-run sixth.
Camryn Lyman delivered a game-tying RBI single that plated
Alyssa Okada.
Kristen Blanchard then had a tiebreaking RBI single. And
Alyssa Polemeni's groundout plated Lyman to produce the two-run cushion.
Earlier, Polemeni's solo homer in the first opened the scoring.
LIU already had clinched the NEC's NCAA tourney berth because Merrimack remains in the transition process from Division II and is not yet eligible.
