BROOKVILLE, N.Y. — The LIU women's tennis team capped another strong weekend by handing Sacred Heart its first NEC defeat.
The Sharks defeated UMass, 4-1, indoors on Saturday night, then moved outside to the LIU Tennis Center and topped Sacred Heart, 4-3, on Sunday afternoon.
Marion Deloziere won the clincher at fifth singles against the Pioneers.
Deloziere as well as
Saki Oyama at third singles both had a pair of straight-set victories during the weekend.
The Sharks improved to 3-0 against conference opponents.
"It was a strong weekend for us clinching two important wins," coach
Jan Griga said. "We opened both matches with excellent doubles and carried the momentum into singles really well. We got off to an especially convincing start against Sacred Heart, clinching the win 4-0 before dropping three three-setters we were unable to close out.
"Overall, we are on a great trajectory and are looking ahead to a productive week of training after some well-deserved time off. We are excited to see how this squad will cap off the regular season before heading into the conference tournament."
LIU next faces Navy on Saturday in Annapolis, Md.
