TEANECK, N.J. — The LIU baseball team got the pitching performance it was craving as well as continued slugging from
Jake Mastillo.
Inserted into the rotation a week ago as the Sunday starter,
Garrett Yawn tossed six scoreless innings and Mastillo homered twice as the reigning champion Sharks avoided a sweep on the opening weekend of NEC play with an 8-5 victory against Fairleigh Dickinson.
Ty McInnes produced a seven-out save.
Mastillo now has a team-leading seven homers. He has a pair of two-homer games this season.
Yawn produced his longest outing in his Sharks career.
LIU jumped to a 7-0 lead in Sunday's series finale.
LIU next steps out of conference play for its home opener, now scheduled for Wednesday at 3 p.m. against St. John's. The game originally had been scheduled for Tuesday at the LIU Baseball Stadium, and was pushed back a day to avoid expected inclement weather.
