PHILADELPHIA — The LIU women's tennis team celebrated a weekend in the City of Brotherly Love with a 5-2 victory against Drexel on Sunday.
Saki Oyama's 6-3, 6-4 win at fourth singles over Cristina Corte Gonzalez clinched the win for the Sharks.
Earlier,
Victoria Erechtchenko's 6-3, 7-6 (6) win over Renata Lombera at second singles put LIU within Oyama's win of claiming the victory.
A day earlier, LIU fell to Penn, 6-1, although the final score belied the tightness of the matches.
Leo Boisseau at first singles and Erechtchenko at second singles both went to first-set tiebreakers before falling. And Oyama at fourth singles lost a 10-6 tiebreaker after splitting the first two sets.
"It was a solid weekend on the road for us," coach
Jan Griga said. "We had some good battles with Penn on Saturday and then wrapped up the weekend with a convincing win over Drexel, which has some tough players. We are looking to hit the practice courts hard this week in preparation for our next road trip."
LIU is busy next weekend, with road matches Friday against Rutgers, Saturday against Boston University and Sunday against Merrimack.
