BROOKVILLE, N.Y. — The LIU men's lacrosse team staged a furious comeback, scoring four straight goals while holding Lindenwood scoreless for more than 22 minutes on Saturday.
However, Wesley Scurci broke that drought for the Lions with the tiebreaking goal with 66 seconds remaining and LIU fell, 9-8, in its home opener on Saturday at Bethpage Federal Credit Union Stadium.
The Sharks trailed by four goals with time winding down in the third quarter.
Sean Boll then started the comeback with a goal with 12 seconds remaining in the period. Then, in the fourth quarter,
Tom von Bargen,
Matt Olbeter and von Bargen again scored to even the game at 8 apiece.
After Surcey's late goal,
Karl LaCalandra caused a turnover and picked up the ground ball with 27 seconds remaining to give the Sharks a final chance. But LIU's ensuing clear attempt failed.
Von Bargen, a junior midfielder from Wantagh, led LIU with four goals. His previous high had been a pair of two-goal games last season, against Siena and Hobart.
LIU (0-2) returns to action Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Hofstra.
