FORT MYERS, Fla. — The LIU softball team celebrated Opening Day on Friday.
The Sharks opened a five-game weekend hosted by Florida Gulf Coast with losses to UNC Greensboro (6-2) and Southern Illinois (3-0).
In the opener against UNC Greensboro, the Sharks pounced for a pair of runs in the top of the first, on an RBI single by
Alyssa Okada and a bases-loaded walk to
Alexia Castro.
However, UNC Greensboro chased LIU starter
Lindsey Cowans with a three-run second inning during which it opened a 4-2 lead.
In Game 2, starting pitcher
Alyssa O'Donnell limited Southern Illinois to two runs (one earned) in five innings. The Sharks' lone hit came via a one-out double from Castro in the fifth inning.
The Sharks get right back to action on Saturday, facing Binghamton at 10 a.m. and host FGCU at 12:15 p.m.
