BOSTON, Mass. — The LIU men's and women's track and field teams traveled a select number of athletes to the John Thomas Terrier Classic over the weekend.
Assistant track and field coach
Chris Sauer, who also doubles as the head cross country coach, accompanied the team.
And there were a plethora of new personal best marks which included a new school record.
During day one,
Elyas Ayyoub broke the school record in the 3000m that was held by Henry Penn since 1981. The sophomore notched a 8:05.11, breaking the mark of 8:06.01 set by Penn.
John Schwab and
Bryan Villafuerte joined Ayyoub and set their own career-highs in the 3000m.
Three Sharks —
Tyrese Bowes,
Justin Rajab and
Julian Jimenez — each set PRs in the 800m run.
Aidan Haughian (4:19.32) and
Darin Cofield (4:22.36) set personal bests in the mile run.
On the women's side, day two proved to be successful.
Tess Duignan and Gabby Ortuno set personal bests in the 800m.
Ainhoa Brea's PR of 16:32.23 would have been good for a school record, but she ran the event unattached.
To close the weekend, the men's DMR relay team of
Jonathan Gonzalez,
Jesse S. Wells, Cofield and Ayyoub notched a 10:00.04.
LIU track and field returns to action tomorrow at the Empire State Classic.
