Football Falls to Kent State as Return to FCS Schedule Looms

KENT, Ohio — Tight end Owen Glascoe displayed the talent that has drawn interest from NFL scouts and the LIU football team's offense flexed its muscles early, advancing to the red zone in each of its first three possessions.

However, the Sharks ultimately lost to FBS member Kent State, 63-10, on Saturday at Dix Stadium.

LIU dropped to 0-3, although it has faced a challenging early season schedule. The Sharks have lost to a pair of MAC opponents — Toledo and Kent State — as well as Villanova, the fifth-ranked team in the FCS.

Glascoe's 60-yard TD reception from quarterback Derek Green, which included a lengthy scamper into the end zone, evened the score at 7 late in the first quarter.

Michael Coney's first career field-goal conversion, which came after a fourth-down conversion earlier on the drive, then made it 14-10 in second quarter.

But LIU got no closer.

The Sharks actually could have come away with points on each of their first three possessions.

After receiving the game's kickoff, Green completed 5 of 6 passes, marched LIU 66 yards and consumed 8:25 on the opening drive.

Glascoe had three receptions on the drive, and he and Davon Wells each had third-down catches to move the chains. However, that drive — and a chance for the early lead — went for naught on a missed 35-yard field goal attempt.

Green completed 14 of 18 passes for 172 yards and one touchdown before giving way to backup Luca Stanzani in the second half, as had also been the case at Toledo.

"We did some good things," coach Ron Cooper said. "The best thing is we came out of this three-game swing pretty healthy. We know what we've got to do now.

"I knew Kent State would be hard to stop. They opened up with two big-time opponents in Oklahoma and Washington and still moved the ball against them. We thought that would happen. But the guys played with effort."

LIU now reenters FCS play and, soon, its Northeast Conference schedule. The Sharks host former NEC member Bryant next Saturday at 1 p.m., then open league play at Merrimack on Oct. 1.
