Destiny Remains in Baseball's Hands after Falling to Mount on Friday

EMMITSBURG, Md. — The LIU baseball team still has destiny in its hands, but the Sharks missed an opportunity on Friday to secure the top seed in the Northeast Conference Tournament and clinch at least a share of the conference title.

The Sharks fell to Mount St. Mary's, 11-6, on the host school's Senior Day.

LIU, which entered the day with a magic number of one, can nonetheless claim the No. 1 seed and at least a share of the regular-season title if second-place Bryant falls to Wagner later Friday.

Otherwise, the Sharks and Bryant will be tied at 17-9 in the NEC entering the final day of the regular season on Saturday. LIU owns the seeding tiebreaker between the teams.

On Friday, LIU jumped on top courtesy of Colin Adams' second-inning solo homer — his third long ball in the past five NEC games.

However, a couple of near-misses snowballed in what became a five-run third for the Mountaineers. Third baseman Christopher Wasson and left fielder Seth Surrett converged on a ball that dropped in shallow left field for a double by Ryan Fisher. Tyler Long then hit a ball back up the middle that kicked off pitcher Jarod Wade's leg for an infield single.

Trailing 5-1, the Sharks plated Luke Turner on a double by Surrett a half-inning later. But LIU ultimately left the bases loaded in the frame when Giovanni Ciaccio flied out on a full-count offering.

Ciaccio reached over the center field wall to take away a would-be homer for the second out of the bottom of the fourth, but Mount St. Mary's ultimately posted four runs in that frame to grab a 9-2 lead.

EJ Exposito's three-run homer in the eighth clawed the Sharks within 10-6. Exposito's 12th long ball of the season moved him into a tie for seventh on the program's all-time Division I single-season list, joining Alfredo Cardwood (1984) and James Ruocchio (1989).
