HISTORY! Baseball Blanks Siena to Set Program's D-I Win Record

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. — The LIU baseball team has a new program record for wins. It came in shutout fashion.

Garrett Yawn and four relievers combined to blank Siena, 5-0, in the nonconference finale on Tuesday.

The victory gave the Sharks their 32nd win, topping LIU's 2018 squad for the Division I program record. And LIU (32-17) still has a three-game conference series at Mount St. Mary's and an entire postseason remaining.

Christopher Wasson delivered a three-run double to open the scoring in a four-run first inning against Siena (11-34). Saints starter Matt Kahn walked the three batters immediately preceding Wasson's bases-clearing hit.

"The guys before me set it up," Wasson said. "The bases aren't loaded if the guys before me don't get on. They set up in the inning. And then I got a good pitch to hit and poked it down the line."

Chris Buehler, Shane Tucker, RJ Latkowski and Kurt Lange joined Yawn on the seven-hit shutout. The quintet issued no walks, in start contrast to the three free passes issued by Siena ahead of Wasson's first-inning double.

Yawn limited Siena to four hits while striking out three in an efficient 66-pitch performance over five innings.

Tucker made his first appearance since April 12.

"We just controlled the zone well," Yawn said. "We were ahead in a lot of our counts. When you start ahead, it's easy to stay ahead."

As for the program's win record, Wasson said: "That's a goal we had from the beginning of the season — to get to 32 wins. To get it with three games left and headed into the playoffs is big for us."
