NEW BRITAIN, CONN. – The LIU baseball team traveled to Central Connecticut State for a three-game series on Friday, taking down the Blue Devils in game one, 4-3.
Michael Edelman and
Connor Price anchored the offense, combining for seven hits, three runs batted in, and three runs scored. With the victory, the Sharks move to 18-11 overall and 4-3 in the Northeast Conference.
LIU got started fast in the first when
Seth Surrett got hit by a pitch to begin the game.
Michael Edelman hit an RBI double to deep left field to send In Surrett, taking an early 1-0 lead in a handful of pitches. Edelman would swipe third base in the inning for his NEC-leading 19
th of the year.
Giovanni Ciaccio followed with a walk and
Christopher Wasson was beaned for the second HBP of the inning to load the bases. With two outs,
Connor Price drew a walk to bring home Edelman and grow the lead to 2-1, Sharks.
The Blue Devils answered with a solo homerun from Elliot in the third to cut the deficit in half, trailing 2-1. During the next frame, Edelman hit a line drive to left for a double, his third of the afternoon. Exposito singled through the left side of the infield before Ciaccio hit a sacrifice fly to bring home Edelman, pushing the lead back to two runs, 3-1.
EJ Exposito had a fantastic defensive play to end the fourth for
Joshua Loeschorn to keep the lead at 3-1. With one out in the top of the fifth, Price connected on his first homerun of the season just over the right field wall, increasing the lead to 4-1. Loeschorn threw another scoreless frame to preserve the Sharks lead.
CCSU was able to tag two runs in the sixth to bring the score to 4-3.
Chris Buehler came on to relieve Loeschorn in the seventh, picking up three quick outs to send the game to the eighth with the same score.
Edelman singled to left in the eighth for his fourth hit of the day, his second time earning four hits this season. Entering the ninth, Buehler struck out antoehr batter to complete his outing, making way for
Josh Gainer to come on and earn the two-out save, his third of the season.
Loeschorn finished with six innings of work, allowing four hits and three earned runs while striking out three to earn his sixth win of the season. Niman was given the loss for the Blue Devils.
