BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – It was a special senior day for LIU women's lacrosse.
The Sharks closed the regular season on a four-game win streak with a resounding 22-4 win over Howard to finish 5-3 in conference play.
12 seniors were honored on Saturday afternoon. Those players were
Isabelle Peng,
Emma Cantwell,
Montana Craft,
Ava Barry,
Whitney Moran,
Amanda Masullo,
Hailey Duchnowski,
Alyssa Boll,
Riley Hollenbach,
Sydney Marzano,
Payton Napoli, and
Kelly Hughes.
"It was really nice to honor the seniors and the graduates," head coach
Meghan McNamara said. "It's very special, especially having the parents on the field with their daughters that are now entering the professional world. What a great moment and a great day."
To add to the list of accomplishments,
Hailey Duchnowski earned four saves on the afternoon which now makes her the program's all-time leader in total saves. After the fourth save, the team burst with joy on the sidelines.
"Everyone knew, and my assistants let me know that the record was there," McNamara said. "I think Hailey had an inkling, so once I had an idea, I was keeping track. It's incredible to be able to make that many saves in a collegiate career is awesome."
LIU had 12 different scorers with Masullo tallying four and
Leah Nonnenmann,
Olivia Fantigrossi, and
Rachel Weber all had hat tricks with three.
Moran had two goals, and
Gina Toscano,
Amanda Dowler,
Ryan McAllister,
Pierson Schuchart,
Samantha Dickerson, Cantwell, and Peng each had one.
Francesca Vasile-Cozzo assisted on five goals, her new career high.
The Sharks await their opponent for the 2022 NEC Tournament. The first round will begin on Thursday, May 5. This marks the second time in LIU history that they have clinched a spot in the postseason.
"We're going to roll with the momentum," McNamara said. "These women worked really hard to be in this position. It was a challenging stretch of non-conference games, but it was a great learing experience. The team is excited and there is a lot to be proud of, but we realize we have unfinished business."
