Duck Sighting! Alum James Varela Debuts in Atlantic League with Long Island

CENTRAL ISLIP, N.Y. — James Varela's Atlantic League debut contributed to a victory for the Long Island Ducks.

Varela, a 6-foot-1 righthander from Levittown and 2019 LIU Post product, combined with three other pitchers on a shutout victory for the Ducks on Saturday against York.

Varela handled the final frame in the 8-0 victory, surrendering one hit while throwing seven of 10 pitches for strikes.

He officially signed with the Ducks on Friday.

Varela produced a 28-10 record, 3.20 ERA and 333 strikeouts in 314 2/3 innings with LIU Post from 2016 through 2019. His decorated resume includes All-America honors as a junior.

Varela was signed by the Los Angeles Angels out of college and went a combined 2-2 with a 3.99 ERA in 16 relief appearances for four of the organization's Class A affiliates in 2019.

Last season, he resumed pro baseball with Grand Junction in the Pioneer League.
