Augusta, N.J. – LIU defeated FDU 10-3 on Friday, advancing to the championship game of the NEC Tournament.
Justin DeCastro went the distance for the Sharks in the win, tossing a complete game, nine-inning outing while striking out three and allowing just three runs. It was the sixth time this season the senior pitched at least seven innings while surrendering three or fewer runs.
Much like in game one, three familiar heroes emerged for the LIU offense in this one.
Mike Polubinski went 2-for-3 with 3 RBI,
Cord Dobrinski put together a 3-for-4 performance, and
Joseph Durso hit a two-run homer in the win.
LIU scored three in each of the third and fourth innings, respectively, to secure a 7-1 lead by the end of the fourth. The third inning featured an RBI double from Polubinski and a run-scoring single by Dobrinski, with
Nick Matson later coming around to score a third run on a muffed throw.
Ryan Rivera lit his team's offensive spark in the fourth with an RBI single, with Polubinski later scoring him on a sacrifice fly. Matson also drove in a run with an RBI single to build up the lead and set the tone in the early goings.
With the win, the Sharks are now set to play in the championship game, matching up yet again with FDU on Saturday, May 23 at 3 p.m.
