NEW BRITAIN, CONN. –- The LIU baseball team completed its sweep of Central Connecticut State on Sunday, winning game three, 5-2. With the victory, the Sharks capture their 20
th win of the season and sixth win in Northeast Conference play. Additionally, their 20 wins are good for first in the conference.
It was a pitcher's duel through the first three innings as
Ryan Neuweiler was able to leave a combined five runners stranded to keep the game scoreless heading to the fourth. In the top half,
Michael Edelman continued his hot streak by singling to center, followed by another single from
EJ Exposito. After
Christopher Wasson was hit by a pitch,
Connor Price walked with the bases loaded to give LIU its first lead, 1-0.
Colin Adams singled through the left side to score Exposito, and
Bentley Boekhout hit a sacrifice fly to center, breaking the game open to 3-0, Sharks. Neuweiler collected three straight outs in the bottom half. It was 3-0 after four innings.
The offense piled on two more runs in the fifth that began with a double to right from
Seth Surrett. Exposito reached on an error and
Giovanni Ciaccio walked to load the bases once more. Wasson grounded into a fielder's choice that sent home Surrett, and Price singled to score Exposito, growing the lead to 5-0. The Blue Devils responded with a run in the bottom half, trailing by four.
Chris Buehler entered the game for Neuweiler after five frames, retiring the side in order in the sixth. Buehler would go on to throw two innings without allowing a run and giving up only two hits.
In the bottom of the ninth,
Josh Gainer came on for the save opportunity. After CCSU scored on a wild pitch, Gainer forced two quick outs to end the game and complete the sweep, 5-2.
Three Sharks finished with two hits, and both Wasson and Price each had two RBIs. Neuweiler earned the win, his third of the year, and Gainer secured the two-inning save for his fifth to lead the team.
